A Path To Healing

On April 27, an article appeared in the online edition of the paper, reporting that the Diocese of Rockville Centre had finally released the list of 101 Catholic priests “credibly accused” of sexual abuse [“Archdiocese Releases List Of Accused Clergy In Bankruptcy Filings,” 27east.com]. Your reporter isolated 10 names as having served on the East End, though the more accurate term would be South Fork, since none of the names from the North Fork was included.

Unfortunately, there is a mistake (possibly a typo) in the official “Exhibit E” of the diocesan filing (used by the reporter) that lists Fr. William J. Remey’s term at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton as ending in 1980. Fr. Remey served at Sacred Hearts until his death in 1988.

I am writing to ensure that readers know that the New York State Child Victims Act “look back window” was extended until August 14, 2021. All victims of any childhood sexual abuse, regardless of how long ago, have until August 14 of this year to file claims. This is a last chance for many to seek justice.

The harm imposed by child sexual abuse is incalculable, but survivors will attest that filing a complaint against the perpetrator goes a long way toward creating a path to healing and reconciliation.
