Sgt. Evelyn Kandel, left, and Phillis J. Wilson, President of the Women in Military Service for American Foundation at Sagaponack Distillery on June 15. Sgt. Kandel, of Glen Cove, served in the  U.S. Marine Corps Women’s Reserve during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. During her time serving, Sgt. Kandel was asked to pose for recruiting materials for the U.S. Marine Corps Women’s Reserve. She was given a uniform to wear for the photographs, but the Marines took it back afterward. Honor Flight Long Island and Col. Frank Tauches, U.S. Marine Corps, retired made sure that Sgt. Kandel finally got the uniform she earned and a ceremony honoring her and her service.  Sgt. Kandel is also Poet Laureate of Nassau County.  DANA SHAW

Dr. Donald Williams and Dr. Latisha Ellis-Williams were married May 29, 2021 in Hanover, Maryland amongst an intimate gathering of friends and family. Ms. Ellis-Williams is a native of Bridgehampton and a graduate of the Bridgehampton High School Class of 1992.

Time To ‘Adopt-a-Patch’

The Friends of the Long Pond Greenbelt is again offering an opportunity for residents to Adopt-a-Patch at Vineyard Field, behind the South Fork Natural History Museum in Bridgehampton. The goal of the program is to restore the field, which has been overgrown with invasive autumn olive shrubs. Adopt-a-Patch was initiated in 2021 in which a volunteer is allotted a section of the field (their “patch”) where they will cut back any new sprouts at least once a month during the growing season. HBBA Garden Party Is June 1

Hampton Bays Beautification Association will hold its 38th annual Garden Party on Saturday, June 1, at Oakland’s Restaurant on Dune Road. The event, featuring an auction, prizes, raffles and “hat parade,” along with lunch, starts at noon. Tickets are on sale now at the Hampton Bays Public Library or Fandango boutique on Main Street; no tickets will be sold at the door. The ticket price is $60 with a cash bar. Boating Course Offered at Library

The Hampton Bays Public Library will offer a boating safety course taught by members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary on Saturday, June 1, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. The cost is $50 per person payable by check to U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 18-06. Participants must be at least 10 years old to attend the class, which meets New York State boating safety requirements. Architectural Tour of Two Sag Harbor Structures Set for May 26

Architectural tours of two of Sag Harbor’s well known structures, the Old Whalers’ Church at 44 Union Street, and Christ Episcopal Church at 5 Hampton Street, will be offered by the Sag Harbor Historical Society on Sunday, May 26, from 2 to 4 p.m. Randy Croxton, president of Croxton Collaborative Architects will begin the Whalers’ Church tour at 2 p.m. The tour of Christ Episcopal Church will begin immediately following and be led by Zachary Studenroth, architectural historian, and Rev. Mosaic Street Festival Coming to Riverhead

Downtown Riverhead will be splashed with color on Sunday, May 26, from noon to 5 p.m., when people of all ages leave their mark in the East End Arts Mosaic Street Painting Festival. In addition to the chalk art, there will be live entertainment, food trucks, kids activities and more. There is still time for vendors, both artisan, food and nonprofits, to reserve a space. Local Hospitals Earn LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equity Designation

All Stony Brook Medicine hospitals, including Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, and all Northwell Health hospitals, including Peconic Bay Medical Center, have been named “LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leaders” for 2024 in the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Healthcare Equality Index (HEI). All hospitals received the top score of 100 on a survey encompassing nondiscrimination and staff training, patient services and support, employee benefits and policies, and patient and community engagement. Stony Brook Medicine continues to grow its dynamic LGBTQ+ Committee to address the needs of the LGBTQ+ community, including patients, faculty, staff and trainees. Our Fabulous Variety Show will present its “Spring Varietal + Crew Showcase” on Thursday and Friday, May 30 and 31, at LTV Studios in Wainscott. The Hamptons Observatory, in partnership with Rutgers University, will present a free, virtual lecture by Rebecca Bresnik, Esq., associate general counsel for international and space law for NASA, on Tuesday, May 21, at 7 p.m. Bresnik was an original drafting participant of the Artemis Accords, which uphold peaceful and cooperative relationships in space.
