Stanley J. Dykovitz of Southampton died on January 22 at the Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 100.

Born on Christmas Eve in 1921 to parents Stanley and Sophie Dykovitz, Dykovitz was raised in East Marion. He graduated from Greenport High School, and liked to tell people he attended “Corn Cob College.”

He was a proud U.S. Navy veteran and could vividly recall stories of his time in the Seabees during WWII (or as he called it, “The Big One”).

After marrying his wife, Hazel, in 1950, they settled in Southampton, where they raised their son, Stanley. He was a commercial lobsterman on his boat, the Hazel E, out of Montauk. He transitioned to conch fishing on the Miss Stephanie in the Peconic Bay, though he was always a lobsterman at heart.

After retiring, Dykovitz enjoyed spending winters in Florida with his wife and going on cruises with friends. He liked watching baseball and football from his favorite recliner, especially the Atlanta Braves and New York Giants.

A child in spirit, he always had a joke to tell or a prank to play, his family said. Though he never could understand Facebook, he mastered sending emails and making FaceTime calls to keep in touch with family and friends, an impressive feat for someone in his 90s, his family noted.

He loved Carvel, even if he always made a mess when the ice cream dripped down the cone, and you could always count on him to finish up any extra food left on the table after a holiday dinner so you didn’t have to pack up leftovers. Though he lived to be 100, it still feels like he is gone too soon and he will be sorely missed by everyone who knew and loved him, his family said.

Predeceased by his parents; his wife of 53 years, Hazel; his brother and sister-in-law, Peter and Camila Dykovitz; and his sister-in-law, Doris Siedenburg, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Stanley E. and Nikki Dykovitz of Hamilton, New Jersey; his granddaughter, Stephanie Hunt and her husband, Grady, of Hamilton; his grandson, Steven Dykovitz and his wife, Lauren, of Sewell, New Jersey; his great-granddaughter, Natalie Abbott, of Hamilton; his brother-in-law, Charles Siedenburg, of South Plainfield, New Jersey; his nieces, Deborah Wagner and her husband, Joseph, of Edison, New Jersey and Donna Krebs and her husband, Thomas, of Rahway, New Jersey; his nephew, Charles Siedenburg and his wife, Amy, of Metuchen, New Jersey; several great-nieces and great-nephews; his great-grandpups, Oakley, Lucy and Ace; and many friends.

Due to weather, memorial service has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 12, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Brockett Funeral Home, 203 Hampton Rd, Southampton, NY 11968.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the Gary Sinise Foundation, PO Box 368, Woodland Hills, CA 91365 (garysinisefoundation.org/donate).

Two Flee After Hampton Bays Crash, Evade Police Search

Two occupants of a car that fled from police then crashed into another vehicle near Slo Jack’s in Hampton Bays evaded an extensive police search and are still at large. Southampton Town Police say that one of their officers had witnessed a 2022 Honda Accord traveling at a high rate of speed in Hampton Bays on Friday afternoon and attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver refused to pull over and sped up. For safety reasons, the officer broke off his pursuit, as is standard police practice in instances where no immediate threat to the public is suspected. ... 3 May 2024 by Staff Writer

The Bus Test

Social media was abuzz last week with a report: An unmarked bus was dropping off adult men in the parking lot of the Macy’s shopping plaza in Hampton Bays. Speculation was rampant, and it largely followed a national narrative about an “invasion” of immigrants ending up in American communities. In fact, there’s little information on what the bus (or buses — there likely were others) was doing. It might have been seasonal workers arriving for the season, but it could have been something innocuous, like a private bus trip returning home. Police were called, but as one town official pointed ... 1 May 2024 by Editorial Board

Terrible Optics

Westhampton Beach Village officials and Police Chief Steven McManus need a lesson in optics. The revelation last week that a body camera video recorded during the investigation of an off-duty Village Police officer who rolled his truck during a single-car accident in November 2021 was not released to the public for close to a year, despite numerous requests from The Press that went unanswered for seven months, sends the wrong signal about the village’s commitment to keeping the public informed. It was only after a request from an attorney on behalf of The Press that a copy of the video ... by Editorial Board

A Costly Hire

Permitting public employees to collect a six-figure pension while simultaneously collecting a six-figure salary is one of the reasons why New York is such a high-tax state. Though the Village of Southampton took it a step further: It wasn’t enough for the new village administrator to receive a $165,000 salary on top of a $120,000 New York Police Department pension — the Village Board just gave Administrator Anthony Carter a $50,000 pay bump, retroactive to when he started in November, in lieu of receiving village health insurance and other benefits.
