For most small communities, the digital age has not provided the sort of face-to-face, constructive and civil debate that drives true innovation and accomplishment. Nuances get lost online and opinions... more

Vital Support

Governor Kathy Hochul’s recent announcement of $20 million in her 2025 budget for victim assistance programs signifies a crucial investment in the well-being and recovery of survivors across New York State. In a time when federal Victims of Crime Act funding faces uncertainties, Gov. Hochul’s commitment ensures that essential services for victims and survivors will remain available. This funding will enable victim assistance programs to continue offering vital support, including counseling, support groups, case management, emergency shelter, and civil legal assistance. At The Retreat, we witness firsthand the impact of such support on the lives of survivors. From our 24-hour ... 7 May 2024 by Staff Writer

Won Me Over

In March, my good friend, George Lynch, wrote to The Southampton Press expressing his, and the Southampton Town Democratic Committee’s, support for congressional candidate John Avlon [“Blown Away,” Letters, March 7]. George aptly described our Democratic Committee as “not an easy crowd,” and that “unanimity is foreign to us.” Upholding that tradition, I was open-minded but skeptical about John Avlon and approached the meeting with the idea that this former CNN senior political analyst, and co-founder of “No Labels,” would need an impressive showing to get my support. It just took that one meeting to win me over, and shortly ... by Staff Writer

Literary Hub

I am writing this having just read that Canio’s bookstore in Sag Harbor may be forced to move [“Canio’s Books, Long a Sag Harbor Cultural Icon, Faces Uncertain Future as Lease Is Not Renewed,” 27east.com, March 20]. This would deal a massive blow to the cultural life of the town, and to the many residents who have come to rely on this literary hub for its thoughtfully curated selection of new and used books, and its slate of vibrant events. During the depths of the pandemic, Canio’s provided a lifeline for my family — suddenly all living under one roof ... by Staff Writer

A Harbor Jewel

We read with great interest your thoughts on the funding process for village museums [“Time To Talk,” Editorial, May 2]. We’d love to share our thoughts on the matter. The mission of the Sag Harbor Whaling and Historical Museum is to protect, preserve and present the glorious history of Sag Harbor. We serve as the repository of some 3,500 rare (and often fragile) artifacts that bring the history of Sag Harbor to life. We are also charged with maintaining the famed Benjamin Huntting House (which, of course, later became the summer residence of Sag Harbor’s great benefactress, Olivia Slocum Sage). ... by Staff Writer

Misplaced Credit

Your recent screaming headline, lauding Nick LaLota, who “helped secure $1 million in federal funding for Southampton Village planned sewer district” [“LaLota Helps Secure $1 Million in Federal Funding for Southampton Village Sewer Installation; Village Still Working on Securing Site for Treatment Plant,” 27east.com, April 24], appears to be press release reporting rather than digging a little deeper and giving a little context on the source of funding. The funds are actually from the 2021 “INVEST in America Act,” aka the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act under President Joe Biden. It became Public Law 117-58 when signed by the president ... by Staff Writer

Safe Destination

We appreciate the op-ed by Karl Grossman [“Is Plum Island Safe?” Suffolk Closeup, Opinion, April 18] yet wish to point out that much work has been done in recent years to make Plum Island a safe and compelling destination for the public. Plum Island has been off-limits since 1897, when the federal government began buying the island to build the Army’s Fort Terry, followed by the Department of Agriculture’s opening of the Plum Island Animal Disease Center in 1954. This relative isolation has contributed to a profound lack of understanding about the island, allowing claims to circulate, including the one ... 6 May 2024 by Staff Writer

Paddle Time

Paddling season is here! I use a canoe, kayak, prone board or stand-up paddleboard. Every place I paddle is a pleasure. I would like to share some of my favorites with you. Paddle from Connecticut Avenue in Manorville to Riverhead: four hours. Circumnavigate Shinnecock Bay counterclockwise from the Coast Guard Station: six hours. Paddle from Orient Point to Riverhead: nine hours. Paddle from Cedar Point Avenue in Noyac to Long Beach in Sag Harbor: three hours. Paddle from Louse Point in East Hampton to Napeague Harbor Beach and go for lunch at Lunch: three hours. Paddle from Riverhead to Inlet ... by Staff Writer

The Fig Leaf

Benjamin Netanyahu and his supporters stated that their goal is to eliminate Hamas. They have a right to pursue this goal. Their unstated goal, softened by being referred to as “collateral damage,” is the elimination, or at least drastic reduction, of the Palestinian people by any means available: death from the sky, starvation, destruction of medical facilities, disease spreading in the crowded encampments in southern Gaza, the region that the Palestinian population was “encouraged” to flee to for safety. Or was it to concentrate them into ever smaller spaces to make the killing more efficient? The inevitable population remnant — ... by Staff Writer

Context Needed

Regarding your editorial, “Time To Talk” [May 2]: Thank you for starting off your opening statement about how valuable Eastville Community Historical Society is — only to compare us to other “worthy” nonprofits and to question the legal system put in place specifically for education corporations. It would be pertinent for the editorial board to provide proper context and content on these processes and why we are qualified to utilize this system of which the residents decide through their vote. I believe the sentiments and position of your editorial is trying to address a generalized and larger issue on ad ... by Staff Writer

Squandering

We are squandering resources at an alarming rate. We are without the will to stop it. Just stop. Can’t stop using too much water … so sewer. Watch the vernal ponds dry up and disappear and then wonder why. We’re nuts. Lee Foster Sagaponack by Staff Writer
