East Hampton Softball
To Miss Playoffs

Back-to-back shutout losses at Sayville (12-0) on May 3 and at home to Rocky Point (9-0) on Thursday, May 5, pushed the Bonackers out of playoff contention with just three games remaining on their schedule this week. East Hampton, which ended a lengthy playoff drought just last season, is 2-7 in League V (4-9 overall). In order to qualify for the postseason, teams need to finish with a .500 record or better.

Bonac Girls Lacrosse
Halts Losing Streak

The East Hampton/Pierson girls lacrosse team (3-10 in Division II, 49.03 power points) defeated Hampton Bays, 11-7, at home on Monday to end a five-game losing streak. Scout Lynch and Emma McGrory each scored three goals, Ella Bistrian added two goals and two assists, and Laura Calderon made 10 saves. The four-goal difference was the closest margin this season for the winless Baymen.

Bridgehampton/Ross Baseball
Facing Uphill Battle

In order to make the Suffolk County Class B playoffs, the Killer Bees (6-9 in League VIII) are going to have to sweep rival Pierson in their three-game series, which began on Tuesday. That’s because they were swept by Port Jefferson last week. Bridgehampton’s best chance to take at least one game from the first-place Royals came in game one of the three-game set on May 3. Port Jeff scored what ended up being the only run of the game on a fielder’s choice, then Bridgehampton junior Kris Vinski shut Port Jeff’s offense down the rest of the way, allowing just one hit and striking out eight in the complete game effort.

Big Week Coming Up For
Southampton Girls Golf

The Mariners (8-0 in League IV) defeated Shoreham-Wading River, 6.5-2.5, on May 3 and Mount Sinai, 8-2, on Thursday, May 5, to keep their undefeated record intact — and to keep up with Sachem, with whom they face off against this week in a battle that will determine the League IV champion. Southampton played Sachem on Tuesday and also will play on Thursday, May 12. Last week’s second match with Shoreham was postponed and rescheduled for May 16, making it Southampton’s final match of the regular season.

Baymen Baseball
Sweeps Shelter Island

Hampton Bays (7-8 in League VIII, 7-10 overall) defeated Shelter Island, 15-5, on May 3, and then the Islanders forfeited the final two games of the series to give the Baymen the three-game sweep. Kazmin Pensa-Johnson struck out 10 batters and allowed one earned run on three hits in six innings to lead Hampton Bays in the one game of the series that was actually contested. Nate Donahue went 4 for 5 with a double, six RBIs and two runs scored and Patrick Donahue went 2 for 2 with a double, two walks and three runs scored.

After an 11-3 loss to Rocky Point at home on May 2, the Westhampton Beach girls lacrosse team finished its regular season schedule with a pair of strong victories. After defeating host Harborfields, 8-7, on Thursday, May 5, the ’Canes picked up a 9-6 victory at Miller Place on Saturday to finish the season 9-5 in Division II, 10-6 overall, with 143.13 power points. As of Monday, Westhampton Beach held the second seed among Suffolk County Class B teams. The top five “B” teams in the county qualify for the postseason, which is scheduled to begin this Saturday, May 14.

Westhampton Beach Softball
In Playoff Contention

Thanks to a current three-game winning streak, and having won five of their last six games, the Hurricanes needed to defeat host Eastport-South Manor on Wednesday to finish with a 6-6 League IV record to qualify for the Suffolk County Class A playoffs. Westhampton Beach defeated Comsewogue, 5-0, at home on Monday to keep its playoff hopes alive. Addison Celi scattered four hits and struck out 13 in the complete game and went 1 for 2 with a double, run scored and an RBI to help lead the ’Canes. Rylee McGinness went 1 for 3 with a run scored and two RBIs and Kali Baumiller went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Prior to its win over Comsewogue, Westhampton Beach defeated host West Babylon, 5-0, on May 5, and defeated Hauppauge, 2-1, at home on May 4 — the ’Canes had lost to Comsewogue, West Babylon and Hauppauge the first time they played each team earlier this season.
