On Sunday, August 14, at 10:30 a.m., multi-disciplinary artist Bastienne Schmidt will be the next guest at The Church’s monthly Insight Sunday series. Schmidt will speak on her work, “Measuring Time, Grid Calendar,” her 2020 piece featured in the exhibition “Threading the Needle,” which explores how the conceptual approaches of contemporary art intersect with the expertise and skill of craft techniques.
In her piece, Schmidt uses the grid as a minimalist meditation on space, perception, and systems. Using materials of muslin fabric, string, and thin transparent paper, this piece was created during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. In relation to the title, the work records the passage of time in a period of uncertainty and disquiet.
Schmidt will speak within the exhibition space before The Church is open to the public. An open and free-flowing Q&A will follow her remarks and allow attendees time to engage fully with the artist and her work. Insight Sundays are the ultimate behind the scenes sneak peek, and a wonderful opportunity to hear an artist focus on an individual piece, see it through their eyes, and explore how it relates to their body of work, career, and process.
Tickets to Bastienne Schmidt’s Insight Sunday talk are $15 at thechurchsagharbor.org. The Church is at 48 Madison Street, Sag Harbor.
