As part of its Viewpoints series of conversations, The Watermill Center will host Niamuck Land Trust CEOs Tela Troge and Shane Weeks on Tuesday, August 23, at 6 p.m.

Troge and Weeks, who is the author of “Good Neighbors: A Shinnecock History from a Shinnecock Perspective,” will share information regarding the work and purpose of the Graves Protection Warrior Society, the mission of the Niamuck Land Trust, Shinnecock history, and history of the indigenous people of Long Island. Copies of “Good Neighbors” will be available for purchase.

Niamuck Land Trust (NLT) was founded in November 2021 by members of the Shinnecock Nation Graves Protection Warrior Society (GPWS). NLT, comprising permanently and solely members of the Shinnecock Nation, is committed to working to protect, preserve and purchase indigenous burial sites and culturally significant sites sacred to the Shinnecock Nation and their neighboring indigenous communities.

With a strong base on cultural education of and for the Shinnecock community, NLT was founded as an entity with the ability to raise funds and other resources to facilitate land acquisitions and continued stewardship of these sites as they are acquired for preservation, ceremonial, and educational purposes.

Viewpoints is The Watermill Center’s year-round conversation series, granting art enthusiasts the opportunity to gather and discuss creative themes vital to the contemporary moment. Viewpoints engages with the community through intriguing dialogue, artist talks, and lectures that span across disciplines.

The Watermill Center is at 39 Watermill Towd Road, Water Mill. For more information about the event, visit watermillcenter.org.
