Tough And Tireless

County Legislator Bridget Fleming of Noyac is running to represent the East End in Congress this year. Bridget and I entered local politics at about the same time, 14 or so years ago, she running for office and I working on various campaigns, hers included.

You get to know a person quite well doing this kind of thing together — it opens up all the nooks and crannies. Based on that close acquaintance over time, I can tell you that Bridget Fleming is as good as they come: tough and tireless, a straight talker incapable of evasion or dishonesty.

This will be a welcome change from our present congressman, Lee Zeldin, who wants to take his sorry act to Albany as governor, but that’s another contest.

Bridget’s also intelligent and accomplished, a Phi Beta Kappa and a prize-winning graduate of the University of Virginia law school who became an assistant district attorney working in the Sex Crimes Unit of the Manhattan district attorney’s office, and, later, chief of a unit there prosecuting fraud in public programs.

Bridget served as a Southampton Town Council member for five years and has been a Suffolk County legislator for almost seven years now. She’s known to be hard-working and tenacious, devoted to personal freedom, equal enforcement of the law, health care for all, and keeping our economy humming by keeping the region clean and beautiful.

Almost everyone running for public office has experience of some kind, but not everyone has experience that’s relevant to the office they’re seeking. Congress is our legislative branch of government. Bridget Fleming offers nearly 12 years of experience as a legislator. Whoever emerges from the Republican primary to oppose her will not have anything like that legislative experience, not even close. That’s how it is, and that’s a big part of what we must take into account in making our choice.

I’ve made mine. I’m voting for working families, sane gun laws, reproductive rights, clean air and water, and saving our democracy from the crazies.

I’m voting for Bridget Fleming for Congress on November 8.
