The Hampton Bays girls cross country team won its season-opening meet, 23-33, over Harborfields at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park on September 8. Running the 2.5-mile course, Hampton Bays head coach Kevin O’Toole said the top Harborfields runners went out fast but his runners stayed patient and played to their strength, letting the race play out over the entire course. After getting up Cardiac Hill, Sofia Galvan and Adriana Tapfer were able to overtake Harborfield’s lead runner and secure the win placing first and second, respectively. Danna Flores and Emma Halsey found their rhythm on the hills as well, O’Toole said, staying near each other and working together to earn fifth and sixth place finishes. Rounding out the top five for the Baymen in the field of 18 were Sumeja Bytyqi (ninth overall) and Ashley Reyes.
“I am really proud of how all of the girls ran tonight,” O’Toole said. “I am thrilled with the effort that they all put in, and they really showed how hard they were willing to work to put themselves in a good position to score for our team. Picking up a win in our first meet of the season is a huge morale booster for us and really shows that the offseason work they did has brought them into September in good shape and ready to run fast this fall.”
