Outdoors

We have had a rare resurgence of summer-type weather. There were record-high temps, with some folks even in the bay swimming. Bonus days saw the air temps over 70 degrees. We are going to have a cooldown that will bring temps back to reality.

November 7 was the first day of scallop season. It opened with dismal reports and no good signs for the future. Low numbers of adults scallops and even lower numbers of juvenile scallops were reported.

This is the fourth year of the massive scallop die-off. Even so, there were a few boats working in the Sag Harbor area on the first day and reports of a few scallops on the north shore.

With the great weather this past week, many anglers were taking advantage and doing some fishing. Blackfishing continues to be good. Mixing in are some large sea bass and even some porgies. Most folks are working the sound and points to Fishers Island. Many limits were caught, and there was constant action with shorts.

Fall variety continues, as there are striped bass, bluefish and albacore to be caught. Both boat fishermen and beach fishermen are enjoying the action. Locally, there are porgies in the bay and some blackfish at the Greenlawns and Brickyard. There is some squid action at the local docks.

Montauk has good fishing. Striped bass and bluefish are being caught on diamond jigs and trolled lures. Bottom fisherman are seeing good blackfishing and sea bass around Block Island.

With the warm water temps, it seems the fishing will last until the end of November, or even longer.

Surf fishing has been fairly good, with both the North and South forks producing as the fish move west. It seems there are plenty of bait to hold the fish.

This may be the year to have fish for Thanksgiving!
