This winter season is still amazing everyone.

After the warmest January on record, now February is here. Thank goodness, the “arctic express” that terrorized the rest of the country only gave us single-digit temperatures and below-zero wind chill one day — one and done. From Saturday to Sunday, we had a 30-degree temperature change.

The forecast predicts another above-average 10 days. Just think, the Farmers’ Almanac is predicting February temperatures to be 5 degrees below average and precipitation below average as well. Let’s wait and see if the warm temps continue.

Even the February full moon that happened last weekend was called the “Full Snow Moon.” Again, we have had no measurable snow this winter season — a few flakes and a dusting is all. We continue to have plenty of wind and rain.

This weather has hindered any wintertime fishing. When a boat has left the dock, reports have been dismal for cod fisherman. There is talk that they are again going to change the status limits. Unfortunately, the changes are never in favor of the fisherman. So to accomplish this reduction, there are many options. We won’t know the outcome for some time.

After the dismal reports of the scallop die-off, there may be some good news. The biologists at Cornell are experimenting with changing the local scallops spawning season. They now have a summer spawn and are going to see if the fall spawn will feel better. This may help the scallops survive in the local bays. Fingers are crossed on this venture.

Prior to the deep freeze, there were still a few boats on the bay catching a few scallops. It would be nice to have it back like the old days.

We are still getting in some beach walks and spending time birdwatching. It’s just amazing how many raptors are living here locally.

There is great waterfowl to watch. All male ducks are getting their breeding plumage already. The birds are using the feeders and there are plenty of turkeys around.

The next fishing show is March 4 at Ward Melville High School, located at 380 Old Town Road in Setauket/East Setauket. The doors open at 8:30 a.m.

And, keep in mind, the annual Sag Harbor Dive Team Fishing Flea Market will be on Saturday, March 11, at the Sag Harbor Fire Department.
