The East Hampton boys basketball team (13-1 in League IV, 15-4 overall) defeated Westhampton Beach, 68-47, at home on Friday evening, and a win in their final game on Tuesday at Comsewogue would have given them the League IV title, or at least a share of it. Luke Reese scored 25 points to lead the Bonackers, while Liam Fowkes and Finn Byrnes chipped in with 18 and 17 points, respectively. East Hampton will likely get a high seed in the upcoming Suffolk County Class A playoffs, one that could get them a first-round bye and home game in the quarterfinals. The Class A playoffs begin this Monday, February 13, with the quarterfinals slated for February 17.
The Bridgehampton boys basketball team (13-1 in League V, 14-5 overall) ran out in front of host Shelter Island, 25-1, in the first quarter and never looked back in what wound up being an 85-33 final on Friday night. All 10 of the Killers Bees showed up on the stat sheet when all was said and done, led by Sae’vion Ward’s 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Alex Davis added 13 points and eight assists and Jai Feaster had seven points and 10 assists in what was Bridgehampton’s sixth straight win. The Bridgies will be the top seed and move on straight to the Suffolk County Class D Championship which will be played February 15 at St. Joseph’s University in Patchogue at 3:30 p.m.
The Pierson/Bridgehampton girls basketball team lost, 47-37, at Smithtown Christian in its regular season finale on Monday evening, but its 59-10 victory at Shelter Island on Friday should be enough to get the Whalers into the Suffolk County Class C Championship against Port Jefferson. Since they finished with a 5-7 League V record, the Whalers will need to petition to get into that game, but head coach John “Woody” Kneeland had previously said that winning one of his team’s last four games should get his team in. As of Tuesday morning, Section XI did not have a Class C Championship game on its brackets, but official brackets are not expected to be out until later this week.
The Southampton girls basketball team needed to win their final game of the regular season on Tuesday at home against Babylon in order to finish with a .500 record and qualify for the Suffolk County Class B postseason outright. Results weren’t available as of press time. The win-or-go-home scenario comes after the Mariners lost their previous game, 45-37, at Mattituck on February 1. They needed to win two of their final four games to qualify and had beaten Greenport/Southold, 32-25, at home on January 30.
The Westhampton Beach girls basketball team put the finishing touches on what was a successful regular season on Tuesday at Eastport-South Manor. Results of that game occurred too late for this week’s paper, but regardless of the outcome, the Hurricanes should finish second in League IV earning them a high seed in the Suffolk County Class A playoffs, which begin this Tuesday, February 14. Westhampton Beach won their most recent game, 49-45, at Comsewogue on February 1. Sandra Clarke scored 21 points, Shannon Sweet scored all nine of her points in the fourth quarter alone and Jasmine Taylor grabbed 12 rebounds.
