The Express News Group visited East Hampton on Thursday, February 9, for the latest in its Express Sessions panel discussion series, “East Hampton Village: Toeing the Line Between Tradition and Innovation.”

The discussion was held at Rowdy Hall on Main Street.

The panel explored changes to the village in recent years, noting that a lot of its traditions and draws have stayed the same, but with the burgeoning population over the past decades have come unique challenges as the once sleepy offseason village has grown into a tourist mecca year-round. Officials are working to bridge the two — hoping to improve infrastructure to meet the needs of continuous new development, while striving to preserve the culture that attracted people to the village in the first place.

The panel included Joyce Tuttle from the Ladies Village Improvement Society, Bradford Billet, chairman, East Hampton Village Foundation, Hugh King, Historic Site Manager, Village of East Hampton, Jerry Larsen, East Hampton Village mayor, and Robert Rattenni, and East Hampton Main Street property owner. The panel was moderated by Executive Editor Joseph P. Shaw.
