On February 1, Governor Kathy Hochul released the executive budget, which included a $3.5 million reduction in library aid and a $20 million reduction in library construction grant funding. These cuts are terrible for libraries on the East End and across New York State.
Our East End libraries are beacons in the communities we serve. This is in no small part related to funds received from the library construction grant program. This funding made it possible for the John Jermain Memorial Library to complete its restoration and expansion in 2016.
Increased investment is needed to maintain and develop the physical infrastructure of New York State’s libraries and to ensure safe, accessible, sustainable libraries for the future.
According to the New York Library Association, over half of New York’s libraries are over 60 years old. The New York State Library estimates the deferred maintenance need at over $1.5 billion.
This program is about more than just libraries. It creates jobs, supports local construction and allows for libraries to invest in energy efficiency.
