In East Hampton, a historic home by architect James H. L’Hommedieu built in 1889 and with connections to Congresswoman Bella Abzug, singer Barbra Streisand and artists James Rosenquist and Willem De Kooning is now for sale.

Just a half mile from the ocean at 32 Ocean Avenue, the residence has 7,000 square feet of living space spread throughout three levels.

It’s known as the Robert S. Bowne House and is side by side with another home by L’Hommedieu, the James Gallatin House, according to Art & Architecture Quarterly.

“The Bowne House borrows its form from the 1747 Abraham Gardiner House (Ladies Village Improvement Society) on Main Street.” AAQ reported. “The harmonious relationship between the summer cottages on Ocean Avenue and the Main Street farmhouses is especially evident in the Bowne and Gallatin Houses. Robert S. Bowne was first president of the Long Island Rail Road. James Gallatin, grandson of Albert Gallatin, Secretary of the Treasury under Thomas Jefferson, had spent many summers in East Hampton with his family before building his house.”

The Bowne House has “gorgeous millwork” and box beam ceilings and a floor plan that includes a “gracious entry,” large living room with fireplace, elegant formal dining room with fireplace, sitting room with fireplace, kitchen with breakfast area and butler’s pantry, and a billiards room with fireplace, according to the Brown Harris Stevens listing.

It includes 12 bedrooms, eight and a half bathrooms and nine fireplaces. The acre-plus grounds feature specimen trees and broad lawns.

The listing agents are James MacMillan and Elizabeth Wohl. The asking price is $11.5 million.
