Documentary on Architect and Designer Eileen Gray To Screen at Southampton Arts Center

authorStaff Writer on Mar 7, 2023

Southampton Arts Center and AIA Peconic will join forces on Thursday, March 23, to present a screening of the documentary “Gray Matters,” about architect and designer Eileen Gray, followed by a panel discussion featuring local architects.

Picked in celebration of Women’s History Month, “Gray Matters” explores the long, fascinating life and complicated career of Gray, whose uncompromising vision defined and defied the practice of modernism in decoration, design and architecture, according to AIA Peconic, the East End chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

Gray made herself a reputation with her traditional lacquer work in the beginning of the 20th century and became a critically acclaimed and sought after designer and decorator before reinventing herself as an architect. Gray’s first building was critically praised, but credited to her mentor instead of Gray. Her pioneering work was done quietly, privately and to her own specifications, but she lived long enough to be rediscovered and acclaimed, according to AIA Peconic.

AIA Peconic President Lori K. Beppu will lead the panel, joined by AIA architect members Pamela J. Glazer and Viola G. Rouhani.

The screening will begin at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $20, or $15 for Southampton Arts Center and AIA Peconic members. Register at southamptonartscenter.org.
