Sag Harbor Village Treasurer Timothy Bullock reported that over $10,000 was stolen last week from Sag Harbor Village, although on Tuesday, Sag Harbor Village Police Chief Austin J. McGuire said the theft was not an internal matter and that the money had already been returned to the village’s coffers.
On March 23, at 1:25 p.m., Bullock walked over to the police headquarters to report that the village payroll account had paid out $10,200 in checks between March 16 and March 21 that were never authorized. Six of the checks, according to police, were deposited electronically into a JP Morgan Chase bank account and another check was deposited in-person at a Bank of America branch.
Bullock told police last week that the involved banks had already been notified and the police report was being made to formally document the thefts.
On Tuesday, Chief McGuire said the matter was still under investigation, but that police knew it was not a theft that occurred internally.
“Someone got a hold of the account information and replicated some checks,” said Chief McGuire. “There is no nexus to the village and the village has already been paid back what was withdrawn.”
