The Westhampton Beach boys and girls track teams each had a pair of county champions at the Suffolk County Class B Championships at Kings Park High School on Thursday, May 25.

The girls were led by sophomore Lily Strebel, who was a double champion, not only winning the 800-meter run (2:16.46) but also the 1,500-meter race (4:43.25). Madison Phillips, a junior, won the county title in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.73 seconds.

The boys were led by none other than their distance-running power duo of senior Max Haynia and junior Trevor Hayes. Haynia won the 3,200-meter race in 9:38.10 while Hayes won the 1,600-meter race in 4:28.24.

The Hurricane girls had a few other athletes place in the top three of their respective events to earn All-County honors, which also helped the team place third with 81.33 points in the county behind only Sayville (124) and East Islip (120).

“We wanted to win it but everything had to be perfect and Sayville had a lot of depth,” Westhampton Beach girls head coach John Broich said. “When you look at all of the other county meets, ours was the most competitive.”

Halle Geller, a sophomore, placed second in the 100-meter dash in 12.62 seconds and third in the 200-meter dash in 26.24 seconds. The 4x800-meter relay team of Strebel, junior Oona Murphy, sophomore Anna Blanco and Sophie DePierro placed second in 10:13.37. Senior Kylah Avery placed third in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.89 seconds and senior Emily Tully placed third in the pentathlon with 1,780 points. She placed sixth in the high jump (1.27 meters), third in the shot put (7.13 meters), third in the long jump (4.31 meters), sixth in the 100-meter hurdles (21.62 seconds) and third in the 800-meter run (2:47.03).

Jack Hendrickson, a junior, was the only other boy to earn All-County honors, placing second in the discus with a throw of 128 feet 3 inches. Murphy just missed out on an individual All-County nod in the girls 2,000-meter steeplechase, placing fourth in 7:38.27. And sophomore Sydney Beardslee placed fifth in the 1,500-meter race walk in 8:45.30.

Phillips and Avery had been competing in the pentathlon, but they competed in individual events to try to score more points for the girls. Broich said he tries to “stress the team more than the individual,” so that’s why he did that, but Phillips definitely, Avery maybe, will be competing in the pentathlon at this week’s state qualifier.

Broich and boys head coach Joe Mensch are both expecting to have a fairly large contingent of athletes at the state qualifier, which is this Thursday and Friday, June 1 and 2, at Comsewogue High School.

“We practiced on Saturday, we had practice this morning,” Broich said on Monday afternoon. “After tomorrow, though, it’s all rest, pretty much. Everyone who will be there at the state qualifier has legitimate shots to make it to states, and if they make it there, they all have legitimate shots to do well upstate in Middletown. So we’ll see.”
