Dalton Portella Presents ‘Wingspan’

authorStaff Writer on Jun 6, 2023

From June 8 to June 27, The Lucore Art gallery in Montauk will be hosting “Wingspan,” a solo show of works by Dalton Portella. The show opens with a reception on Saturday, June 10, from 5 to 9 p.m.

Portella is an interdisciplinary artist, musician and surfer living in Montauk. This show will present a selection of works including some more recent renderings of birds, butterflies, sharks and rhinos. Viewers should expect a range of subjects and varying levels of abstraction all showcasing the masterful application that Portella has honed over the years. It’s not just birds, but it’s all a part of his “Wingspan.”

“When I first met Dalton, he told me a story about an artist who made a couple wait a year for a commission,” recalled gallery owner Chris Lucore. “The artist then used that year to make thousands of sketches for the commission. When the couple returned a year later, the artist completed the work in front of them in five minutes. The couple asked why the artist had them wait a whole year, prompting the artist to reveal a closet overflowing with all manner of sketches, leaving the couple in shock.

“The point of the story being that every bit of the work you did before is concentrated into the work that you will do tomorrow. When I look at Dalton’s work, I see truth in that.”

The Lucore Art is at 87 South Euclid Avenue in Montauk. For details on the show, visit thelucoreart.com.
