In conjunction with “Upon This Ground,” a partnership between The Bridgehampton Museum and Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio, a communal art space and residency based on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Southampton, June resident artist Noel Maghathe, will lead a workshop titled “Reclaiming Landscapes” at Bridgehampton Museum on Sunday, June 11, at 2 p.m.

During the one-hour sculpture workshop, Maghathe will guide participants in the creation of their own landscape through mini candles upon a wax block from a mold they will shape, using beeswax, hemp wicks and herbs to create a unique piece. During this workshop, participants will discuss memories, stories, and visions of reclaiming lands taken. They will spend time sharing these stories and thoughts while creating this work together and discuss how art can be a way to release energy and negative thoughts and share tools about mindfulness through art making.

Noel Maghathe is a queer, mixed Palestinian-American performance artist and curator. They create and perform with queer functional tools to navigate the world, and their practice centers on their Palestinian heritage. Through their work, Maghathe seeks to educate audiences about the pain of occupation and their yearning for their country while also delving into the deeper dimensions of personal identity beyond surface-level labels. Maghathe values connecting with other Palestinian and Arab artists in our homelands and in the diaspora.

Maghathe holds a BFA from the Art Academy of Cincinnati, where they were awarded the Stephen H. Wilder Traveling Scholarship in 2017. In 2022, they exhibited their work at the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center, Pancake House Gallery, Maelstrom Collaborative Arts, and more. Currently based in Cincinnati, Ohio, Maghathe continues to create work in their studio.

“Upon This Ground” is an inclusive, collaborative initiative between Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio and the Bridgehampton Museum that encourages a greater understanding and celebration of the presentation and interpretation of individual and collective history through artist-led discussions, workshops, and demonstrations with current artists-in-residence.

Tickets for the workshop are $20 ($15 for Bridgehampton Museum members). The workshop will take place at the Nathaniel Rogers House, 2539 Montauk Highway Bridgehampton. Register at bhmuseum.org.
