On Sunday, May 5, The American Hotel in Sag Harbor will be the place to be for great food and music. From noon to 2 p.m., Grammy-nominated jazz pianist and Sag Harbor resident Judy Carmichael will play host (and the piano) at a Champagne luncheon to celebrate her long-running NPR radio show/podcast “Judy Carmichael’s Jazz Inspired” and associated educational outreach programs “Jazz: Listening for Life.”

The luncheon will also be a celebration of Carmichael’s launch on WBGO 88.3 FM, a jazz station that, beginning May 6, will be airing an expanded version of “Judy Carmichael’s Jazz Inspired” Mondays through Fridays from 6 to 8 a.m.

Carmichael is one of the world’s leading interpreters of stride piano and swing. Count Basie nicknamed her “Stride,” acknowledging the command with which she plays this technically and physically demanding jazz piano style. She has been featured on “A Prairie Home Companion,” NPR’s “Morning Edition,” “Entertainment Tonight,” CBS’s “Sunday Morning,” CNN’s “Business Unusual” and numerous other shows. The creator of “Judy Carmichael’s Jazz Inspired,” she also hosts and produces the program, which is now in its 25th year on NPR stations across the country and podcasting on all platforms.

In addition to the food and bubbly, Carmichael and her saxophonist/clarinetist Dan Block will play a recital of swinging tunes. Ted Conklin, owner of The American Hotel, is an active supporter of the arts and longtime sponsor of “Judy Carmichael’s Jazz Inspired.” He is donating all income from the event to Jazz Inspired, Inc. the 501c3 foundation that supports the education outreach programs, the podcast and NPR show.

Tickets are a $150 donation per person at judycarmichael.com. No tickets will be sold at the door as space is limited. The American Hotel is at 45 Main Street in Sag Harbor.
