A Call For Artwork For Long Island Biennial

authorStaff Writer on May 23, 2020

The Heckscher Museum of Art is now accepting entries for the 2020 Long Island Biennial, a juried exhibition featuring works by visual artists from Suffolk and Nassau counties. The Biennial reflects the area’s thriving art scene by featuring artists representing a considerable number of communities throughout Long Island. The exhibition offers emerging and established artists the opportunity to gain broader public awareness of their work.

Inaugurated in 2010, this 10-year anniversary of the Long Island Biennial coincides with The Heckscher Museum’s centennial. In honor of this milestone, this year’s Biennial exhibition, which will open in the fall with exact dates to come, is expected to include 100 works of art and fill all four of the museum’s galleries.

Jurors are Erin Kimmel, Art Writer and Ph.D. candidate in Art History, Stony Brook University; Heidi Lange, Director of DC Moore Gallery, New York City; and Southampton’s Paton Miller, an artist and curator.

“It is fascinating how many artists work on Long Island, which is a relatively small geographic area,” said Miller, whose art is represented in The Heckscher Museum collection. “My work experience as a curator has proven to me how varied human expression is. It surprises me every time. A benefit of being a practicing artist is that I am now able to enjoy art even more.”

Long Island Biennial applications and complete guidelines are available at Heckscher.org. Each artist may submit up to three works for consideration. In addition, the finished size of each artwork has increased. Entries may be submitted in the following media: painting, sculpture, works on paper, photography, and mixed media. Applications for Long Island Biennial are open through June 30, 2020.
