The Church, in collaboration with the Sag Harbor Cinema, will present a screening of the documentary “Milton Glaser: To Inform & Delight.” This screening on Monday, October 14, at 4 p.m. has been programmed in tandem with The Church’s fall exhibition “Yes, No, WOW: The Push Pin Studios Revolution.” Following the film there will be a conversation between the film’s director Wendy Keys and April Gornik, The Church co-founder and exhibition co-curator.

Milton Glaser is one of the six artists featured in the exhibition, as he was a founding member of Push Pin studios. In 1968 he founded the New York magazine with Clay Felker and is best known for designing the “I ♥ NY” logo in the 1970s when New York City was at its most dangerous and nearly bankrupt. The simple yet ingenious design instantly became the center of a campaign to revive New York and “I ♥ NY” has endured as one of the most recognizable icons in the world.

Glaser also designed the ubiquitous Dylan poster for CBS Records featuring a silhouette of Bob Dylan with psychedelic hair. He also designed logos for DC Comics, the World Health Organization, the Olympics, as well as memorable advertisements for products like Campari and Brooklyn Brewery. Even the “Mad Men” TV series tapped Glaser, who was already in his 80s, to design their final season poster.

Up until his death in 2020 on his 91st birthday, Glaser also used his extraordinary talent to create witty and elegant designs for public causes like voting, civil rights, anti-war movements, the women’s movement, homelessness, HIV/AIDS awareness, and anti-apartheid. Glaser was even working on a design to help bring together a fatigued and isolated New York during the apex of the COVID-19 pandemic when he died.

Artfully directed by first-time filmmaker Wendy Keys, the film glances into everyday moments of Glaser’s personal life and captures his immense warmth, humanity, and the boundless depth of his intelligence and creativity.

Tickets for the screening are available at sagharborcinema.org. Sag Harbor Cinema is at 90 Main Street, Sag Harbor.
