A Night Out With Paul Davis at Golden Eagle in East Hampton

author on Mar 27, 2018

Illustrator Paul Davis has helped shape the world of design — working for the likes of Disney, Rolling Stone and The New Yorker.

It is not every day that he teaches a public art class.

Join the Sag Harbor local for an art demonstration on Wednesday, April 4, at The Golden Eagle Studio 144 — located at 144 North Main Street in East Hampton — the first half of “A Night Out With Paul Davis,” before moving over to Nick & Toni’s for a two-course dinner, where Davis will dine with participants.

Born in 1938 in Oklahoma, Davis began a cartoonist’s club in high school with friends Russell Myers and Archie Goodwin. He won a scholarship to the School of Visual Arts at age 17, prompting a move to New York, where he studied with Philip Hays and Robert Weaver, as well as George Tscherny.

After graduating, he landed at Push Pin Studios under Milton Glaser and Seymour Chwast, where he worked as an illustrator for magazines, record album covers, book jackets, advertising and more. In 1963, he founded the Paul Davis Studios and expanded his portfolio to include Life, Time, Playboy — home of his first commissioned illustration, a pencil drawing in 1959 — Look, The Saturday Evening Post, Sports Illustrated, Evergreen Review, Harper’s, Harper’s Bazaar, Horizon, McCall’s, Show, Esquire, The New Republic, New York, The New York Times, The New Yorker, Mirabella, Fast Company and more.

His first solo show was in 1968 with the Galerie Delpire, and his work has been seen in museums and galleries around the world, as well as the Museum of Modern Art’s poster collection. He received the 1989 AIGA medal, and honorary doctorates from the School of Visual Arts and the Maryland Institute College of Art.

The Golden Eagle art workshop begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are $75 and reservations are required. For more information, please call (631) 324-0603 or visit goldeneagleart.com.
