On Monday, June 6, at 7 p.m. Sag Harbor Cinema will host a special screening of the 1972 documentary “Andy Warhol” followed by a conversation with director Lana Jokel.
Jokel, whose works include films about artists Claes Oldenburg, Larry Rivers and Keith Sonnier will take part in a post-screening discussion led by Sag Harbor Cinema’s Artistic Director Giulia D’Agnolo Vallan with Vincent and Shelly Fremont, who were part of Warhol’s inner circle. In addition to 20 years of working with Andy Warhol at his Factory in various capacities, Vincent Fremont has been responsible for managing Warhol’s artistic legacy since his death in 1987.
The film shows Warhol in his inimitable style and at his most talkative — discussing life, society, money and art. Exemplifying his uncanny ability to predict the next trends in culture and the art industry, Jokel’s access to Warhol provides an intimate portrait with both casual scenes and interview footage, in which he is more carefully focused on being Andy Warhol.
As art critic Harold Rosenberg noted, “the primary creation of Andy Warhol is Andy Warhol himself.” Including lively exchanges with Phillip Johnson and Barbara Rose, and insights from friends, co-workers, star and art-world figures, the documentary gives an unflinching look into Warhol as a person and an artist.
Tickets for the screening are available at sagharborcinema.org. Sag Harbor Cinema is at 90 Main Street, Sag Harbor.
