After the devastating Main Street fire in December 2016, cinematographer and photographer Don Lenzer picked up his camera and headed straight for the Sag Harbor Cinema.
With permission, he spent long and careful hours going through the building, finding an eerie beauty in its devastation — on view as a new photographic portfolio, “Sag Noir,” opening with a reception on Friday, June 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Julie Keyes Gallery, located at 53 Main Street in Sag Harbor.
“‘Sag Noir’ has brought me more joy and satisfaction than I could have possibly dreamed,” Lenzer said in a statement. “Out of destruction and loss came a lesson in generosity, kindness and community spirit.”
This boxed set of 14 works — which represents a loving observation of the old Cinema — is printed by artist and photographer Jane Martin, and presented in a clamshell box produced by bookbinder Paul Vogel. Each image is a loose photograph measuring 17-inches-by-22-inches, suitable for separate framing.
The first edition of 20 will cost $7,000, increasing to $7,500 after it sells out. All proceeds, after production costs, will benefit the Sag Harbor Cinema rebuilding effort. For more information, visit sagharborcinema.org.
