Join The Church at 11 a.m. on Sunday, July 7, for a joint reading and brief conversation with two rising writers, Mira Dougherty-Johnson and Jenny Xie. Hear their insights and inspirations as the two talk about their writing processes and journeys. After the reading, there will be a Q&A with the writers.

Mira Dougherty-Johnson’s novel-in-progress, “Art Objects” explores representation and portrayal and asks the question of who inherits power over narration and the creation of stories. The novel tells the story of a child born into the New York Art World in the 1970s, who must confront her family and its public, glamorous legacy. A 2018 BookEnds fellow, she holds an MFA in Creative Writing and Literature from Stony Brook Southampton. Her work has been published in several publications. When not writing, she’s keeps herself surrounded by books in her job as a librarian.

Jenny Xie’s first novel, “Holding Pattern,” is an exploration of a mother-daughter relationship strained by cultural and generational differences, and how the main character repairs intimacy through the complex work of professional cuddling. Xie holds degrees from UC Berkeley and Johnson Hopkins University and is the author of “Holding Pattern” (Riverhead Books), a National Book Foundation 5 under 35 honoree. Her short fiction has appeared in several publications. Her writing on design, travel, and culture has been featured in The Atlantic, The Washington Post, Architectural Digest, Apartment Therapy, Them and Dwell, where she was previously the executive editor.

Tickets to the event are $10 (members free with RSVP). The Church is at 48 Madison Street in Sag Harbor. Visit thechurchsagharbor.org for details.
