The East Hampton Library’s Long Island Collection holds the next event in their new series of drop-in, pop-up exhibits. “A Sneak Peek Inside The Long Island Collection: Gardiner’s Island” on Thursday, May 16, from 4 to 7 p.m. Due to popular demand, the exhibit will be on view through Saturday, May 18.

“We encourage patrons to come by to informally learn a little more about Gardiner’s Island and the history of this unique, fascinating place that is part of our community,” said Andrea Meyer, head of the library’s Long Island Collection. “Gardiner’s Island is a perennial topic of interest, since you can see the coastline in the distance from our community, but the island remains entirely private and preserved.

“We understand Gardiner’s Island is a source of endless curiosity for our patrons,” she continued. “We know people enjoy seeing photographs of what the island looks like, so those will be in the exhibit, along with material from Robert D. L. Gardiner’s tours of the island, and some maps that show Gardiner’s Island. We plan to include a little bit about the Gardiner Family, and some items related to the farming and production activities done on the Island.”

The community is welcome to drop-in and interact with Long Island Collection staff, who will be on hand to share information and answer questions about Gardiner’s Island, and the items on view. There is no need to register for the event.

Long Island Collection’s “Sneak Peek” series of pop-up exhibits was designed to highlight items related to some of the most popular topics that people often ask about but may find overwhelming to sift through on their own. The series was designed to encourage people to come back and explore a little bit more, once they understand the range of materials contained in the Long Island Collection. The new drop-in mini exhibits will be on display in The Long Island Collection at the East Hampton Library from 4 to 7 p.m. on their Thursday launch date and remain on view through the Friday and Saturday that follow

The upcoming events in the Long Island Collection Sneak Peek series are: Thursday, July 18, The Culper Spy Ring; Thursday, September 19, Whaling; Thursday, December 5, Home Sweet Home.
