Shelter Island Friends of Music will present one of the most unexpected music events of the East End summer on Sunday, August 3, at 5:30 p.m., with a free performance of Igor Stravinsky’s “The Soldier’s Tale” at the Shelter Island School.
Performed by the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony, the production offers a theatrical spin on the composer’s 1918 work. British actor Bruce Leggett-Flynn stars in this 60-minute adaptation, which follows a fiddle-playing soldier in a battle of wits with the devil.
The performance brings together classical music, surrealist art, and theatrical storytelling. The stage design is inspired by Man Ray and René Magritte, created by visual artist Ariel Adkins, known for her work at the intersection of fashion and fine art. Organizers call the event “Stravinsky meets psychedelic light show” — a unique blend of high-brow and low-brow culture.
Admission is free, with donations appreciated. No reservations are required, and seating is general admission. Early arrival is recommended. The concert will take place at the Shelter Island School auditorium, 33 North Ferry Road (Route 114), Shelter Island. For more information, visit shelterislandfriendsofmusic.org.
