A Summer of Sound with Music for Montauk

Each Music for Montauk concert is timed to end just before sunset — a trio of location, light and sound that creates an atmosphere the summer music festival is known for, starting off on Tuesday, August 7, at 8 p.m. with the Pedro Giraudo Jazz Ensemble at Solé East in Montauk.

The double Grammy-award winning bassist and bandleader embodies the contemporary pulse and edge to this year’s musical programming, highlighting living composers and current music, series directors Lilah Gosman and Miloš Repický explained.

“There is freshness, energy and relevance to the music of living composers that we are very excited to share,” Repicky said in a press release. “We have programmed works by three living female composers for this year’s series, as well as works of Arvo Pärt and Philip Glass, all of whom open our ears to new worlds of sound!”

The festival continues on Thursday, August 9, at 5 p.m. with “Fêtes Galantes” at Fort Pond House in Montauk, a picturesque setting for Debussy’s Sonate for Harp, Flute and Viola by Tomina Parvanova, Lance Suzuki and Jessica Meyer, respectively, with soprano Rachelle Durkin.

“This program is inspired by the idyllic setting of Fort Pond House — a perfect real

world embodiment of the French Fête galante painting style,” Gosman said.

A Sunset Salon will be held on Saturday, August 11, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at The Art Barge in Napeague, featuring new works by Meyer and performances by singer Talya Lieberman and clarinetist Luise Sachs, with Repicky on piano.

On Monday, August 13, a “Bernstein & Co.” concert will star Meyer and Lieberman, as well as baritone Jonathan McCullough, violinist John Marcus, clarinetist Benjamin Fingland and cellist Ani Kalayjian at 6:30 p.m. at Third House in Montauk County Park.

“Listening in the Mirror,” in partnership with the Arts Center at Duck Creek at the John Little Barn, will highlight the acoustics and atmosphere of the venue on Tuesday, August 14, at 6 p.m. with works by Arvo Pärt, Mary Kouyoumdjian, W.A. Mozart and others. Seating is limited, and reserved for donors.

The series will come to a rousing finale with “Dance Suite,” led by violinist Sarah Whitney, on Thursday, August 16, at 6:30 p.m. at Third House. A chamber orchestra and soloists will perform dance-inspired music, including Edvard Grieg’s boisterous “Holberg Suite,” dance arrangements by Trifecta Trio of Appalachian Dance and Libertango, new works by Libby Larsen and Jessica Meyer, and “Company” by Philip Glass.
