Shelter Island Friends of Music continues its 2025 season with a free concert by composer, pianist and accordionist Sam Reider and his ensemble, the Human Hands, on Sunday, July 20, at 6 p.m. at Shelter Island Presbyterian Church.

Known for a genre-bending blend of jazz, folk and classical music, Reider and the Human Hands will perform original selections from their albums “Too Hot to Sleep,” “The Human Hands EP” and “The Golem and Other Tales.”

Reider, a Latin Grammy-nominated artist from San Francisco, has performed around the world and collaborated with artists including Jon Batiste, Sierra Hull, Laurie Lewis and Paquito D’Rivera. His 2022 solo piano album “Petrichor” was named one of DownBeat Magazine’s Best of 2022. Reider and Venezuelan artist Jorge Glem were also featured on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series and earned a Latin Grammy nomination for their joint album, “Brooklyn Cumaná.”

The Human Hands features Reider on accordion and piano, saxophonist Eddie Barbash, multi-instrumentalist Roy Williams, and bowed string player Duncan Wickel. Their performances are marked by improvisation, cultural fusion and melodic storytelling.

Admission is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome to support future concerts. A post-concert reception with the artists will follow the performance. Shelter Island Presbyterian Church is located at 32 North Ferry Road (Route 114), Shelter Island. For more information, visit shelterislandfriendsofmusic.org.
