Join Sara Cochran, curator of the exhibition “Are You Joking? Women & Humor,” on Friday, July 19, at 6 p.m. for what will be her final After Hours with The Church. In this program, Cochran will guide guests on a curatorial tour of the exhibition outside normal hours, providing an exclusive experience, before sitting down to discuss the process and insight gained during the curatorial process. Following the tour, there will be a Q&A with the audience.

Cochran was the inaugural chief curator at The Church. She announced her resignation in April and this exhibition is her last with the organization. Learn what prompted the theme of this summer’s show, what criteria Cochran looked for in the works selected, and hear her overall reflections on women’s role in the world of humor.

Following the program, the community is welcome to celebrate Cochran by expressing gratitude for her work and wishing her well in her future adventures and endeavors.

Cochran joined The Church in 2020 and has worked on over 10 exhibitions, including four major exhibitions she co-curated with Eric Fischl: “Road Rage” (2021), “Empire of Water” (2022), “Threading the Needle” (2022) and “Strike Fast, Dance Lightly: Artists on Boxing” (2023), and one with April Gornik — “Return to a Place by the Sea” (2023).

Previously, she collaborated with artist Gregory Sale on his year-long project “Future IDs” on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay. She was director and chief curator at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, where she doubled the museum’s annual attendance, increased its revenue and vastly expanded its presence on social media. As curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Phoenix Art Museum, Cochran organized 15 exhibitions including premiering and traveling Kehinde Wiley’s “Memling Series” in 2013.

Tickets for After Hours are $20 ($10 members) at thechurchsagharbor.org. The Church is at 48 Madison Street in Sag Harbor.
