While most westerners have at least a basic familiarity with traditional Chinese art, the isolationism and restrictive policies of the post-war years precluded a contemporary art scene from flourishing in China. Filmmaker Lana Jokel was born in Shanghai, China. She grew up in Brazil and was educated in France and the United States. This month, Ms. Jokel is showing two of her films on the subject of Chinese contemporary art at Keyes Gallery in Sag Harbor.

The first on Thursday, July 11, at 8 p.m. is the 2004 film “Chinese Contemporary Art: Artists Working in China.” A new storm of change has swept across China in recent years, and has nourished an astounding flowering of innovative, energetic and challenging contemporary art. This hour-long documentary links the 3,000-year-old tradition of Chinese art with the very latest accomplishments of the visionaries of Chinese art today.

Ms. Jokel studied languages and attended the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School. Her documentary film career began with the American pioneers Richard Leacock and D.A. Pennebaker. She edited many documentaries on art and music before making her own films. Among her many documentary subjects were Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg and Larry Rivers.

The title of the second film, to be screened Thursday, July 18, will soon be announced.

Keyes Gallery is located at 53 Main Street at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor.
