In celebration of Sag Harbor artist Dan Rizzie’s new book, recently published by the University of Texas Press, and an accompanying exhibit, the Peter Marcelle Project in Southampton will host “An Evening with Dan Rizzie” on Saturday, May 16 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Showcasing an artistic career that has been both broad-ranging and consistent over four decades, Mr. Rizzie is an internationally acclaimed American artist who has created a unique iconography of the natural world in paintings, collages, and prints. Since the mid 1970’s he has had over 90 solo exhibitions. Mr. Rizzie’s work is included in the permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Parrish Art Museum, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Scottsdale Museum of Art, among many others.
Known for his detailed collage work and the textural quality of his surfaces, Mr. Rizzie’s work is often influenced by the rhythms of the natural world and the artistic influences of a well-traveled youth. Born in Poughkeepsie, he grew up in India, Egypt, Jordan and Jamaica. He received his BFA from Hendrix College in Arkansas in 1973 and his MFA from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas in 1975. He first began to achieve national recognition in Texas. In 1989 he relocated to the East End of Long Island, where he still resides today.
The exhibition of Mr. Rizzies work will remain on view at the Peter Marcelle Project, 4 North Main Street, Southampton, through May 30. For more information, visit petermarcelleproject.com
