Greenport-based environmental artist Cindy Pease Roe creates paintings and sculptures that celebrate the luminous beauty of plankton, the small and microscopic organisms in sea water that provide nourishment for many larger animals. On Friday, July 26, from 6 to 8 p.m., the Sag Harbor Whaling and Historical Museum presents “Plankton Not Plastics,” an exhibition featuring the work of Ms. Roe, including sculptures that are primarily made from marine debris collected from local beach cleanups.
Ms. Roe’s artwork is friendly, engaging, playful, educational and, most important, persuasive. Her mission is to create pieces that give voice to the natural world which has been silenced and abused and to ignite the public to change and live life in a more mindful way.
In addition to the installation, Ms. Roe will conduct two educational hands-on “Upsculpt” workshops at the museum for children ages eight and up. The first workshop is on Sunday, July 28 and the second will be held Sunday, August 4 with both running from 1 to 3 p.m. The workshops give participants a hands-on introduction to the sculpting process with a focus on marine conservation. Ms. Roe will demonstrate basic techniques using marine plastic debris to help kids make their own plankton-inspired sculpture to take home. The cost is $25 which includes materials. Space is limited, call the museum at 631-725-0770 to reserve.
The Sag Harbor Whaling and Historical Museum is located at 200 Main Street in Sag Harbor.
