Art Space 98, a new gallery located at 98 Newtown Lane in East Hampton, will present its inaugural exhibition, “People and Lost Traces” featuring oil paintings and acrylics by Thomas Buehler, and clay assemblages by Rosemarie Schiller, on Saturday, May 21 with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m.
Swiss-born artists, Mr. Buehler and Ms. Schiller have a long history of working together in various media while maintaining distinct styles and artistic messages. In this exhibition Mr. Buehler’s vibrant colors are set next to Ms. Schiller’s dark clay figures. The exhibit is united by themes they both encountered while travelling in southern Mexico and the Sonoran desert. Both artists employ open spaces and vast horizons, cultivating a feeling of human commonality and oneness in the face of the harshest elements.
This exhibition will mark the premier of Mr. Buehler’s acrylic “miniatures” — travel journals painted during his explorations of the jungles of Chiapas, along the Usumacinta River. Ms. Schiller, a sculptor, continues her exploration of the human condition, a theme that runs throughout her art work. Ms. Schiller’s work is inspired by the solitude of desert, wilderness and its inhabitants. The sculptures are bound by the common theme of resilience: standing alone in open space, surviving.
