To strike and dash about a liquid, or semi liquid substance. To move in, or into, a liquid substance and cause it to splatter. To mark or overlay with patches of contrasting color or textile.

To display prominently. An ostentatious display.

All are definitions of the word “splash,” and the inspiration behind the newest exhibition at The White Room Gallery, opening Saturday, January 12, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. at 2415 Main Street in Bridgehampton.

“As an artist living in Noyac, I am ever absorbing the beauty of the surrounding waters and the strength and steadfastness of our trees,” artist Heidi Rain said. “My response to such inspiration is to express myself through the media of watercolor and ink, pastel, charcoal, photography, and fabric inspired by the masters — Claude Monet, Edouard Manet, Jackson Pollock, Pablo Picasso, Georgia O'Keeffe and Joan Mitchell.”

Water is one of photographer Lynn Savarese’s favorite subjects to capture through her lens, and she has traveled far and wide for it — from the East End to Nantucket, the Adirondacks and Louisiana, to the Charles River, the Maldives and the Caribbean, to Iceland, Argentina, Brazil, Australia, France, Thailand, Vietnam and Russia.

“Lynn delights in exploring water in all of its manifestations — from calm to turbulent, and from gently lapping to crashing in frothy tumult — in the hopes of evoking how water uniquely soothes, excites, inspires, consoles, renews, delights and awes,” a press release said.

A parallel group exhibition will include Ryan Schmidt, Steve Cohen, John Mazlish, Trefny Dix & Bengt Hokanson, Adrienne Fierman, Mark Seidenfeld, Zoe Breen, Tanya Minhas, Donna Bernstein, Kathy Buist, James C. Leonard, Nicholas Down, Brian Craig, and Marissa Bridge.

The show will remain on view through February 10. For more information, call (631) 237-1481 or visit thewhiteroom.gallery.
