Auditions Planned For 'Mamma Mia!' At Southampton Cultural Center

author on Dec 18, 2018

Center Stage at Southampton Cultural Center will hold auditions in January for its upcoming production of “Mamma Mia!”

Both a vocal and dance audition are required to be cast in this jukebox musical based on the songs of ABBA. Readings from the script will also occur.

Penned by Catherine Johnson, the story centers on Sophie, who has invited her mother’s past lovers to her wedding in hopes of determining who her father is.

Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, former members of ABBA, composed the music. The score features “Dancing Queen,” “Super Trouper,” “Lay All Your Love on Me,” “Money, Money, Money” and, naturally, “Mamma Mia!”

The musical debuted in 1999 on the West End of London, where it continues in production to this day, and opened on Broadway in 2001, becoming the longest-running jukebox musical in Broadway history before closing in 2013. The musical was adapted as a film in 2008 and spurred a movie sequel, “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” just this year.

The roles of Sophie and her mother, Donna, have been cast. Donna's suitors, Sophie's friends and other parts are available. Center Stage requests that those auditioning should prepare 16 to 32 measures of a pop/disco/ABBA tune and bring suitable clothing and shoes for a dance audition and a flexible schedule.

The open auditions will take place on Thursday, January 3, and Friday, January 4, at 6 p.m. at Southampton Cultural Center’s Veterans Hall. Late arrivals will be seen at the discretion of the directors.

Michael Disher directs and Amanda Jones musically directs. Alyssa Kelly choreographs.

Most rehearsals are scheduled Mondays through Fridays in the evening. For further information, contact Michael at mbentondisher@gmail.com.

Performances will run between March 8 and 24.

Southampton Cultural Center is located at 25 Pond Lane, Southampton Village.
