Bay Street slates vacation theater camps for kids

author on Feb 2, 2010

The Bay Street Theatre Kids’ School Vacation Theatre Camp will run from February 15 to 19 this year and return for the spring break from March 29 to April 2, running from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Each week-long session will include classes and games incorporating every aspect of theater, including acting, singing, improvisation, dance and more.

The camps are designed to offer a special opportunity for kids to explore their passion in theater arts as they write and perform in their own mini-musical. Taught by Broadway professionals, theater camp is suited to both experienced theater kids and novices alike.

Back by popular demand, Debra Barsha will lead both camp sessions. A professional teacher as well as Broadway performer and musician, Ms. Barsha is the current pianist, singer and assistant conductor for Broadway’s “Jersey Boys.”

Ms. Barsha has earned a reputation for being able to draw out the strengths of each child while helping students explore their likes and dislikes in the performing arts. “I tell the kids in theater class that there is no such thing as a mistake,” she said recently. “It’s one of the only places in their lives they will ever hear that. As long as you are in character, you are allowed to be and do anything you want!”

School Vacation Theatre Camp is recommended for children age 8 to 12. The cost for one week is $350 per child. Students are asked to bring a bag lunch and snack and have a willingness to learn. Class size is limited; the deadline for enrollment is February 5, space permitting. To register, call the Bay Street administrative office at 725-0818, ext. 110.

Once school is back in session, Bay Streets’ new Kids’ Afterschool Classes will resume, with sessions devoted to music, theater, improv and multimedia to be offered. Visit www.baystreet.org for details.

While Bay Street’s box office is closed, more information on any camps or classes may be found at www.baystreet.org, or by calling 725-0818, ext. 110.
