The Church will host “In Process We Trust,” a conversation between authors Bill Goldstein and Thymaya Payne, on Saturday, October 11, at 4 p.m. The discussion will explore the creative intersections between biography and memoir, and how both writers are navigating the challenges of their latest works-in-progress.

Moderated by Kristen Santori, the event will include brief readings from each author’s current project, followed by a discussion on craft, process, and personal experience. A Q&A with the audience will close the program.

Goldstein is currently at work on a biography of Larry Kramer, the legendary playwright, novelist, and AIDS activist. Drawing from years of research and a personal connection with Kramer, Goldstein’s project offers a layered perspective that merges historical narrative with firsthand experience. He developed the book in part during his residency at The Church and is the recipient of a 2024–25 Public Scholars grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Payne, known for his work in film and nonfiction, is turning the lens inward with a new memoir titled “AIDS, Raves, and Pirates.” In contrast to his previous biographical work, including a forthcoming project on civil rights leader Walter White, Payne’s memoir reflects on his relationship with his father and examines the nature of memory and emotional projection. Like Goldstein, Payne developed his current work during a residency at The Church.

The program coincides with “Here & There: The First Churchennial,” The Church’s fall exhibition, and takes place on the 38th anniversary of the 1987 LGBT March on Washington and National Coming Out Day. In honoring Larry Kramer’s legacy and spotlighting LGBTQIA+ voices, the event invites the community to reflect, celebrate, and connect through literature and storytelling.

Tickets for “In Process We Trust” are $25 for general admission and $20 for members. The Church is located at 48 Madison Street, Sag Harbor. For tickets and information, visit thechurchsagharbor.org.
