Beth Macy talks about challenges facing women in journalism at Rogers Library

author on Mar 9, 2010

Journalist Beth Macy will discuss “The Honest Hair Club and Other Perils of Being an Aging Girl Reporter” on Tuesday, March 16, at 7:15 p.m. at the Rogers Memorial Library in Southampton.

Currently a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University for the 2009-2010 academic year, Ms. Macy is a prize-winning reporter on the families beat for The Roanoke Times. She has written extensively about family issues, immigration, aging baby boomers, teen pregnancy and more. She is also a blogger and the founder of the Honest Hair Club.

Ms. Macy, whose work appears in Salon as well as “Best Newspaper Writing for 2007-08” and numerous other publications, will talk about growing older when 76 million other baby boomers are slouching toward retirement at the same time; the difficulty journalists face covering issues they are a part of; the choices journalists and editors make about what issues get the most coverage; what it takes to make an honest journalist; her life as a blogger, and why she started the Honest Hair Club.

To illustrate her discussion, Ms. Macy will show images and slides of her 25 years in journalism. For reservations or more information, call the library at 283-0774, ext. 523.
