Hendrik Meurkens, a harmonica and vibraphone virtuoso who is considered a master of Brazilian jazz, is a regular of the New York jazz scene and has appeared in venues from Brazil to Germany and throughout Europe. On Friday, August 16, at 6 p.m., Meurkens and his quartet, featuring pianist Misha Tsiganov, bass player Joe Fitzgerald, and drummer Samuel Martinelli, perform at Jazz on the Terrace, the Parrish Art Museum’s summer outdoor music series.

Born and raised in Hamburg, Germany, Meurkens started the path of a musician as a teenager. After mastering both the vibraphone and chromatic harmonica, he pursued formal studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston as a vibraphone major. In 1982 he moved to Rio de Janeiro, invited by Brazilian harmonica player and composer of bossa nova, Mauricio Einhorn, to immerse himself completely in the country's music styles. Mr. Meurkens' understanding of the Brazilian music vocabulary has been praised by native Brazilian musicians. He relocated to the U.S. in 1992 after being signed by Concord Records.

Jazz on the Terrace is organized by musician Richie Siegler. Guests may bring their own chairs, blankets, and picnics to enjoy the live music from the terrace or on the lawn. Admission is $12 (free for members, children and students). For details visit parrishart.org.
