Hamptons Jazz Fest Winter Series returns to the Parrish Art Museum on Friday, February 24, with a 6 p.m. concert by Colombian pianist and composer Carolina Calvache whose global music has brought her to the New York music scene.
Calvache will perform a varied program at the Parrish, including original tunes, global music, and Latin jazz with her trio. Her body of work as both performer and composer draws inspiration from mingling and disparate traditions to carve out a unique space for her own sound. Warming the winter night with resonating sound and Latin themes, the concert will feature elegant and animated piano tunes.
A native of Cali, Colombia, Calvache’s artistry established her firmly in the New York music scene for over a decade at venues including Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Cell Theatre, Fat Cat, and The Jazz Gallery. Following her widely praised debut release “Sotareño” (Sunnyside, 2014), which earned a spot among the Best 10 Albums of 2014 by Latin Jazz Network, Calvache revealed the full extent of her talent as a composer, orchestrator and songwriter on her second release, “Vida Profunda.”
As a bandleader, composer, and orchestrator, Calvache has headlined institutional venues that embrace both emerging talent and established artists including the Kennedy Center where, along with seven select pianists from all over the world, she performed in the Mary Lou Williams Jazz Festival in 2011. Her touring projects with the Carolina Calvache Quartet feature interpretations of generations-old Latin American rhythms and aesthetics through contemporary sounds. She has toured nationally across Colombia via Banco de La Republica’s sponsorship, and has performed in festivals including Denton Arts Jazz Fest, Crested Butte Music Festival, Madison Music Festival, Colombian Encounter of Musicians in NYC and at the Vermont Jazz Center.
Hamptons Jazz Fest, produced by The Jam Session Inc., is a series of performances that bring world-class musicians in the fields of jazz, Latin and world music to a diverse cross-section of populations on the East End of Long Island. The Winter Series continues to bring exciting performances to cultural organizations from October through May.
Tickets to the concert are $20 ($15 museum members, $10 students) at parrishart.org. Parrish Art Museum is at 279 Montauk Highway in Water Mill.
