Classic and family films keep rolling at The Suffolk on Sunday, September 29, with “To Kill A Mockingbird” at 1 p.m. and “Monsters, Inc.” at 5 p.m.
The Suffolk began showing classic and family films this past April beginning with “The Philadelphia Story” and “Beauty and the Beast.” The new series was met with rave reviews echoing the desire for somewhere to see classic and family favorites back on the big screen. Now featuring new lunch and kid-friendly menu offerings to enjoy throughout the movies, these films are a great way to spend an afternoon or evening with the whole family.
“To Kill a Mockingbird,” released in 1962 and directed by Robert Mulligan, is a faithful adaptation of Harper Lee’s novel. The film follows the story of Scout Finch, her brother, Jem, and their father, Atticus, set in a small Alabama town during the 1930s. Atticus, a lawyer, defends Tom Robinson, a Black man falsely accused of raping a white woman. Through Scout’s eyes, the film explores themes of racism, morality, and justice, highlighting the deep-rooted prejudice in the community. Gregory Peck’s portrayal of Atticus Finch became iconic, embodying integrity and compassion in the face of societal injustice. The film captures the essence of the novel’s message about the importance of empathy and standing up for what is right.
“Monsters, Inc.,” a 2001 animated film by Pixar, is set in a world where monsters generate power by scaring children. The story follows two monsters, Mike Wazowski and James P. “Sulley” Sullivan, who work at the titular Monsters, Inc. factory. Their lives are turned upside down when a little girl, Boo, accidentally enters their world, causing chaos since monsters believe children are toxic. As Mike and Sulley try to return Boo to her home, they uncover a conspiracy within the company and learn that laughter, not fear, is a far more powerful energy source. The film is a heartwarming tale of friendship, courage, and the discovery that things are not always as scary as they seem.
