Dance your way into the new year with LayeRhythm, The Church’s first artists-in-residence in 2023. Since 2015, the dance troupe, founded by Artistic Director Mai Lê Hô, has highlighted under-recognized freestyle dance and music voices in the traditional performing arts landscape.
LayeRhythm provides entertainment, community building, education in cultural history, preservation of street/club dance forms, and a support system for emotional and social well-being. LayeRhythm dedicates itself to risk-taking improvisation and interactive audience engagement through performances and events. The public is invited to an interactive “Dance Jam Session” at The Church on Saturday, January 14, which will be a performance followed by a dance party. Audience ideas will serve as the muse for dancers, MCs, and musicians to create live movements, sounds and improvised lyrics, building up the energy throughout the evening.
LayeRhythm works from a diverse cultural palette, including hip hop, funk, soul, house music, popping, locking, waacking, Detroit jit, Chicago footwork, krump, flexN, breaking, voguing, litefee, and house dance styles. LayeRhythm’s residency is in collaboration with Works & Process at The Guggenheim; and will conclude a day before the group’s performance, Works & Process “Underground Uptown Dance Festival: LayRhythm (On The Move) with Masterz at Work” at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum on January 17.
LayeRhythm’s Dance Jam Session is Saturday, January 14, at 7:30 p.m. at The Church, 48 Madison Street, Sag Harbor. Tickets are $20. Visit thechurchsagharbor.org for details.
