Mark Borghi in Sag Harbor opens “Dana Louise Kirkpatrick: Dial 0 For Anything” from November 25 to January 4. An artist reception will be held Saturday, November 26, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Dana Louise Kirkpatrick, born in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1976, is a contemporary artist whose work is best characterized as a loose and graphic style reminiscent of the 1980s street art movement.
Based in Los Angeles, California, her work aims to contextualize social, cultural and individual behaviors as they relate to themes such as injustice and violence. Kirkpatrick scavenges a variety of materials — from house paint to found detritus — that reposition the commonplace and the refined.
Her current body of work stems from her extensive stay at the Chateau Marmont. Kirkpatrick creates drawings on hotel stationary with graphite and colored pencils, fat stick and collage, sourcing inspiration from the deranged comfort found in cartoon characters, highlighting their “complex psychological interpretations and sinister undertones” while creating profound visual statements on societal turmoil. She highlights the escapism found in these “charming, hapless, hopeless heroes, crooked forlorn outsiders and blow-you-up villains” by pairing them with sinister phrases and materials sourced from our daily news cycle. Corruption, injustice and social upheaval inform the subject of many works in this collection.
“Dial 0 For Anything” will feature nearly 40 works ranging in size and subject made during her time at Chateau Marmont. Mark Borghi is at 34 Main Street, Sag Harbor. Visit markborghi.com for details.
