In a dramatic switch, a few of the framers who help other people present their work in the most attractive and complementary context are getting a chance to put their own artwork on view for the public at the Mark Humphrey Gallery. The exhibition, “Points of Departure,” features works by three local artists who work at the Southampton gallery and frame shop and are ready to spread their own artistic wings.

The paintings on view are by Trina Michne, Clayton Calvert and Maggie Shively. Now in its second year, the employee show is becoming somewhat of a tradition, as this same trio was featured in last year’s inaugural show. This year’s show explores the concepts of trying something new, examining the everyday world or peering into the hitherto unseen.

Situated in the side gallery, pieces include large abstract paintings and intimate portraits of seagulls on the beach in a diverse presentation of work by the three artists. Work by Ms. Michne includes portraiture, abstraction, wave paintings, and her signature surfing girl, Becky.

In the main gallery, artwork by Ross Bleckner, Roy Lichtenstein, Alex Katz, Donald Sultan and Donald Baechler is on display. Included is some of gallery owner Mark Humphrey’s geometric abstract art.

Letting the employees mount their own exhibition offers the artists an opportunity to learn the business side of art, Mr. Humphrey said. Setting the show in the height of the summer was a no-brainer. Since the gallery doesn’t typically hold art openings, Saturday’s artists’ reception didn’t impinge on the typical order of business.

“The best time to do an opening is when it’s summer,” Mr. Humphrey said. “Why not let them have their gallery show in July? It makes the most sense.”

One significant difference from typical gallery shows, Mr. Humphrey said, is that the gallery doesn’t take any commission on art sales. Instead, he asks the artists in the show to donate 10 percent of all sales to the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons.

“Points of Departure” will remain on view through July 27. The Mark Humphrey Gallery is located at 95 Main Street in Southampton. For information, call 283-3113.
