Don Lenzer's 'Sag Noir' Photographic Portfolio Offers Images Of Old Cinema

East End cinematographer and photographer Don Lenzer has created a photographic portfolio of the old Sag Harbor Cinema which he is presenting in a boxed set entitled “Sag Noir, A Photographic Tribute to the Cinema.” Mr. Lenzer took the 14 images in the portfolio after the December 2016 fire which destroyed a large portion of the building. This set represents his loving observation of the old cinema, which is currently in the process of being rebuilt by the Sag Harbor Cinema Arts Center.

“‘Sag Noir’ has brought me more joy and satisfaction than I could have possibly dreamed,” said Mr. Lenzer who spent long and careful hours going through the cinema, finding an eerie beauty in its devastation. “Out of destruction and loss came a lesson in generosity, kindness and community spirit.”

An opening for “Sag Noir, A Photographic Tribute to the Cinema” will be held Friday, June 14, with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. at Julie Keyes Gallery, 53 Main Street, Sag Harbor. The set of images was printed by artist/photographer Jane Martin with a frontispiece forward by Mr. Lenzer and it’s presented in a clamshell box produced by the bookbinder Paul Vogel. Each image is a loose photograph measuring 17” x 22,“ suitable for separate framing. The entire boxed set is priced to start with initial sales at $7,000, increasing to $7,500 as the edition of 20 sells out. Proceeds after production costs will be entirely donated to the Sag Harbor Cinema rebuilding effort.
