Stephen Leatherman, aka Dr. Beach, whose eagerly anticipated and often contentious annual list of the United States’ “10 Best Beaches,” will give a talk on “The Coastal Environment” on Saturday, July 26, at 6 p.m. at the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton. The lively and informative illustrated lecture is being offered in conjunction with the museum’s current exhibition, “Sand: Memory, Meaning, and Metaphor.”
A professor and director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University, Dr. Leatherman is one of the world’s foremost authorities on beach-related issues from coastal erosion to hurricanes to beach safety.
As chief scientist of the eastern Long Island Coastal Conservation Alliance, he is deeply involved with the protection and preservation of the beaches of the East End and will talk about this area’s beloved beaches and what can be done to maintain their pristine beauty. He’ll also share images and stories about his travels to some of America’s most eye-catching, dramatic, and striking beaches. A book signing and reception will follow the talk.
Admission is $10, or $5 for Parrish members. Advance registration is recommended, as seating is limited. To reserve space, call Nicole Chance at 631-283-2118, ext. 40; e-mail chancen@parrishart.org, or visit parrishart.org.
“Sand: Memory, Meaning, and Metaphor” will remain on view through September 14.
