"Evita," "Frost/Nixon" & "Fellow Travelers" Coming to Bay Street Theater's MainStage

It may feel frigid now, but it is only a matter of time before the summer season sneaks up.

And when it does, Bay Street Theater will be ready.

“We are very excited to announce Bay Street’s 2018 Mainstage Summer Productions. It will be a season about the rise and fall of giants,” explained Artistic Director Scott Schwartz. “The subjects of all of the plays and musicals are icons of the 20th century who made indelible marks upon our world.”

Set during Hollywood’s notorious Blacklist, the world premiere of “Fellow Travelers” by Jack Canfora will kick off the fresh slate of theater from May 29 to June 17, examining the relationship between theater legends Arthur Miller and Elia Kazan, their connection to Marilyn Monroe, and how the politics of the McCarthy era affected their friendship and work.

Up next is Peter Morgan’s “Frost/Nixon,” staging June 26 through July 22. From the mind of Netflix’s “The Crown” and the writer of “The Queen,” the play revolves around the landmark series of interviews between British journalist David Frost and former President Nixon three years after he resigned.

“It’s a battle of wits that pits a broadcaster against one of America’s most complex and wily presidents; a riveting story of the collision of politics and the media,” according to a press release.

Closing out the season is a revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s and Tim Rice’s musical “Evita,” which will take a new look at the iconic Eva Perón and her ascent to the top as the First Lady of Argentina from July 31 through August 26. The classic score features some of Webber’s and Rice’s biggest hits, including “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina,” “High Flying, Adored” and “Another Suitcase in Another Hall.”

“While all three stories are set in times different than our own, I think they have a lot to say about our world today, about the worlds of politics, government, media, and art,” Schwartz said. “It’s a season that, I hope, will give our audience thrilling, entertaining theater and inspire lively conversations all summer long.”
